Darby Allin has been one of the breakout stars since AEW’s game-changing inception in 2019.

Currently the TNT champion, Allin is still only 28 years old but has become an integral part of AEW’s rise in the wrestling world.

His unique persona outside of the ring and lovable daredevil style inside of it has made him an instant hit with wrestling fans everywhere.

Now, AEW have partnered him up with wrestling legend Sting for his first match since 2015.

The WCW icon and WWE Hall of Famer is now 61, but he appears to be having a final run with AEW after signing a multi-year deal with the company. Zoom bingo boards.

talkSPORT spoke to Darby Allin about his working relationship with Sting and all things AEW.

On what it’s like to be partnered with Sting first…

“When I work with him, you can’t stop and smell the roses. It’s go time.

“That’s a huge thing for me to be in charge of telling his story at the tail-end of his career. You’re writing history here and I really don’t want anybody to go back and say ‘Oh, you know, when he got with Darby Allin it was kind of like not good’ or whatever you would say.

“So to me, there’s a lot of responsibility and it’s amazing to have that put on me. I thrive in these situations.

On how he find out he was working with Sting…

“To be honest, I was standing in the rafters doing my thing. I thought I was sitting in the rafters just because that’s how I am in real life, sitting away from everybody [laughs].

“I didn’t put two-and-two together. When I finally did get told about Sting I was like ‘oh, s***!’ It’s going to be a big one and it was. That debut… that was something special. Now it’s time to kick ass, dude.

“I dropped out of film school, so visualising things, I love everything to do with storytelling and film so the wheels, man [in my mind]… it’s a seven day a week job for me in my head. It doesn’t end Thursday morning.

On if Sting is physically ready to wrestle again…

We were walking around Jacksonville the other day. There was this six-foot fence. I jumped the fence and I told Sting ‘I’m going to take some photos’ because we were looking at some weird stuff in Jacksonville. I was like ‘I’m going to take some photos for you of this weird building’ and he’s on the other side of the fence that’s locked up. And he’s like ‘what, you don’t think I’m going to jump this fence?’ He climbs up and he jumped the fence. So I’d say he’s good to go!

On why Sting wanted to work with Darby Allin first…

“He visualises a lot of things. He likes characters and things like that so when he first saw my vignettes and my promos — whatever you call them — he was super hyped on them.

“He just thought they were so different and unique. So with the story we’ve been doing, I’ve been sending him all of these visual ideas and I’ve been talking in-depth to him.

“Like, ‘yo, this, this, this and this’ and he likes it. He really likes how my brain works with things. He’s very confident he’s in good hands.”

On why and how he joined AEW…

“It’s been huge for me being on a big stage like that, but at the end of the day, them saying to me ‘you do you, do whatever you want’ that was big to me as a human being.

“Because I hate being tied down. I don’t care how big your company is, I don’t care how big anything is in life, if someone starts putting chains on me, I’m gone. I do not put up with that. I ain’t no puppet.”

On working with Tony Khan in AEW…

“There’s a lot of trust that goes into him and me. Whether it’s me skateboarding or jumping off an 80ft bridge, there’s a lot of trust that I’ll be walking into tapings A-OK.

“I have no complaints. It’s been real good. I think I told him a long time ago, all I care about is longterm storytelling. And you look at this Taz feud, we’re almost at the nine month mark from when we started, if not longer.

“That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do, longterm storytelling.”

On Cody Rhodes’ influence in AEW…

“From the start, even before I step foot in this company, all the behind the scenes stuff like getting my contract set up, I was just talking to Cody and we were on the same page.

“He knew what I wanted, he knew I wasn’t going to put up with anything. He’s like ‘alright, you want the ball? You’re going to fight me in the first ever Fyter Fest and we’ll see how you do taking that ball.’ So I put 110 percent into that, and I know it sounds cliche as hell, but it’s true.

“I did everything I physically knew how to do in that match. So to fast-forward a year and we had the championship match, you couldn’t have put a better ending on that story… if it is the ending!”

On Cody Rhodes bringing him to AEW…

“Yeah, I would say he was [the one who recruited me]. Only because I heard through a mutual friend that he was interested in signing me.

“I did everything physically possible to get out of my current contract that I had somewhere else and got it done. Me and Cody had long talks about what I wanted and who I wanted to be, it was good.

“But the whole team was on board with it, all the EVPs were on board with it, but me talking to people? I only really talk to Cody.”

On tagging with Jon Moxley…

“I would like to be in a tag team and possibly with him. I’d love us to go in there with FTR because I really dig what those guys are doing. Whenever my and Moxley’s worlds collide again, I’m totally open to the idea.”
